Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla suspended 30 opposition MPs on Monday for the duration of the Winter Session of Parliament, among them was Congress veteran Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. The move was made in response to complaints by Members of Parliament calling for a reply from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the security lapse in the Lok Sabha.
Days earlier, 13 MPs—nine of them are from the Congress—were suspended for making signs and acting in a disorderly manner. This new action follows that suspension. Since Wednesday of last week, a unified Opposition has been seeking statements from Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leading to a series of adjournments.
In an interview on Saturday, Prime Minister Modi stated that an investigation into the incident was necessary rather than a parliamentary debate. In response to the statement, the Congress charged that he was trying to avoid a debate on the matter because the BJP intended to shield its MP Pratap Simha, whose office had given the two intruders who caused a commotion inside the Lok Sabha, access cards.
