Senior Citizens Are Advised To Wear Masks in Karnataka As COVID-19 Cases Increase In Kerala

Following the discovery of a case of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 in nearby Kerala, the Karnataka government on Monday ordered anyone over 60 with comorbidities, fever, coughing, and phlegm to wear face masks at all times. According to Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, officials have been asked to take measures such as increasing testing among persons with similar symptoms and suspected cases, as well as stepping up surveillance in border regions.

He noted that as the situation is being constantly watched, there is now no need for any restrictions on people’s freedom of movement or ability to assemble, and the government would soon provide an alert. Nobody has to worry about this. Our technical advisory committee, led by Dr. (K) Ravi, convened yesterday after we had a meeting the day before, and our officials and specialists discussed the steps that should be followed,” Mr. Rao stated.

Mask wear is required for persons over 60, those with comorbid conditions, such as heart or renal problems, and those who have a fever, cough, or phlegm. We are informing the general public about this. Additionally, we have requested that our health centres and hospitals be ready. In border areas that share a boundary with Kerala, such as Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, and Chamarajanagara, there ought to be increased surveillance,” he continued.

According to him, the government will determine what other actions were necessary depending on the circumstances. Instructions have been given to expand testing, and people with symptoms and suspicious cases are being asked to submit to mandatory testing in addition to increased border surveillance.
